The Venus Zodiac and Venus Annual Calendar: A Celestial Dialogue in Motion
Christiaan van der Klaauw Astronomical Watches unveils two extraordinary timepieces that deepen its legacy of celestial craftsmanship: the Venus Zodiac and the Venus Annual Calendar. These new models are not merely instruments of timekeeping. They are also mechanical interpretations of the cosmos, capturing the intricate dance between Earth, Venus, the Moon, and the Sun in real time.
Founded in 1974, Christiaan van der Klaauw has become synonymous with astronomical horology. With the Venus Zodiac and Venus Annual Calendar, the Dutch maison once again bridges the gap between science and poetry, inviting wearers to experience time not just as a measurement, but as a cosmic journey.
Few celestial bodies captivate the human eye like Venus. Often visible as the brightest object in the sky after the Sun and Moon, Venus has long fascinated astronomers and dreamers alike. Though it shares similarities with Earth in size and composition, it is a world of extremes. Therefore, it’s surface temperatures soar to an inhospitable 462°C (864°F), and its atmospheric pressure is crushingly dense. This stark contrast between familiarity and hostility only adds to its mystique. Making it an ideal subject for horological storytelling.
At the heart of both the Venus Zodiac and the Venus Annual Calendar lies the CKM-01 movement, introduced in 2024. This sophisticated in-house caliber is paired with a newly developed Venus module. An astronomical complication of remarkable precision and complexity. The dial itself is constructed from four separate discs. As a result, three of which rotate continuously to display the relative positions of Venus, Earth, and the Moon. Together, they form a miniature planetarium. An ever-evolving snapshot of our corner of the solar system.
The watches depict, in real time, the orbits of Earth and Venus around the Sun, as well as the Moon’s journey around Earth. This dynamic display transforms the dial into a living tableau, offering a poetic visualization of celestial mechanics that is both educational and mesmerizing.
The Venus Zodiac presents this cosmic narrative through a more artistic lens. Its deep blue aventurine dial evokes the shimmering night sky, with flecks that mimic distant stars. Around its perimeter, the zodiac signs mark the Sun’s position throughout the year, with each transition typically occurring around the 21st of the month.
This model also reinterprets the moonphase display in a refreshingly intuitive way. For example, when the Moon aligns between the Sun and Earth, a new moon is shown. Next, when Earth lies between the Sun and Moon, the display reveals a full moon. It is a rare fusion of beauty and astronomical accuracy.
In contrast, the Venus Annual Calendar leans into technical sophistication. Its refined sunray-finished dial provides a more structured backdrop for the same celestial choreography. An outer ring displays the annual calendar. It shows days of the month arranged in clearly defined sections that reflect each month’s length. This mechanism requires adjustment only once every four years, making it both practical and precise.
Beyond the calendar, the Venus Annual Calendar reveals fascinating astronomical data directly on its rotating discs. The Earth’s orbit around the Sun, for example, is shown as 365.2 days, while its orbital speed reaches an astonishing 107,206 kilometers per hour. Venus, even swifter, travels at 126,071 kilometers per hour and completes its orbit in just 224.7 days. The watch also displays the Moon’s orbital period and phases, further enriching its scientific narrative.
Tth timepieces are housed in elegant 38mm cases, available in stainless steel or rose gold. A domed sapphire crystal offers an unobstructed view of the rotating celestial bodies. Plus, the transparent case back reveals the intricate beauty of the CKM-01 movement. Inside, hand-finished star-shaped bridges and a skeletonized rotor. Crafted in the form of the brand’s sun-shaped logo, it demonstrates the maison’s commitment to artisanal excellence.
Technically, the movement features a 60-hour power reserve. In addition, a free-sprung hairspring and a variable-inertia balance wheel, operate at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour. With 36 jewels and meticulously finished components, it exemplifies the harmony between engineering and artistry.
