World’s Tallest Wooden Hotel – Sustainability in Swedish Lapland

The world’s tallest wooden hotel is made almost exclusively from wood and is now open for guests everywhere. The Wood Hotel can be found at the birthplace of cross-country skiing, Skelleftea in Swedish Lapland. The new hotel is part of a five-day and four-night Wood Hotel Experience from Off the Map Travel adventure travel specialists. The VIP experience is a mix of sustainability and nature in a beautiful setting.

The world’s tallest wooden hotel is designed for enjoyment in the forested area of northern Sweden. Welcome are both couples and families. They will experience the hotel along with local adventure and gastronomy. Available from December to March, the Wood Hotel Experience begins with an overnight stay in Stockholm. Next, take a flight to Skelleftea. Once there, guests will be transferred by electric car to the Wood Hotel.

Alex Minnis from Off the Map Travel states, “This is an opportunity for sustainability-minded visitors who search out ‘neo luxury’ looking for culture and escapism all wrapped into one comfortable, climate-sensitive package. Being made out of wood contributes to the building’s being climate-positive as the structure absorbs more CO2 than it uses. It also contributes to comfort and personal well-being, reducing stress and improving sleep.”

The new Wood Hotel stands 75 meters tall. In addition, it has 20 stories and is made almost entirely from spruce and pine sourced from the neighboring forests. Also, it dominates the local skyline. But it seamlessly fits into the town’s natural beauty with its wood construction. The world’s tallest wooden hotel has 205 contemporary rooms. Each is filled with the rich, warm smell of the trees they are built from. In addition to a rooftop spa, the hotel has three stunning restaurants. For example, dine at an Italian café, an Asian restaurant and one with locally sourced, Sami-inspired food.

As part of the experience, guests will create their own gin at Skelleftea’s award-winning distillery. Thus, you will use locally foraged ingredients. Guests can also choose to go snowshoeing to take in the sights of this beautiful part of Swedish Lapland. Later, relax in the hotel’s Vana Spa with its saunas and outdoor pool. Enjoy panoramic views over Skelleftea and its forests. In winter, the new itinerary is perfect for guests to experience the Northern Lights. Take a self-guided walk with well-marked trails that depart directly from the hotel.

Full Itinerary:
1st Day – Arrive in Stockholm and stay overnight in the city
2nd Day – Fly from Stockholm to Skelleftea Airport for an electric car transfer to The Wood Hotel

Celebrate Halloween and Visit the Most Haunted Places

With Halloween only a week away, many of us love the fear factor of ghosts and spirits. Now you should plan a visit to some of the most haunted places.

Enjoy a memorable travel experience and stay, eat and play at bone-chilling haunted destinations. We love scary movies but it’s one thing to sit in a safe theater and acting all tough and brave. It’s quite different to spend the night in a haunted hotel. Do you dare try?

There are some terrific travel deals this year for the spooky Halloween weekend. Each year, more people want to experience a haunted experience. The thrill of terror draws many to face their fears head on.

So take advantage of visit the most haunted places some holiday getaways this year. Here’s a Halloween travel list, courtesy of Gogobot, who is changing travel planning by utilizing its own personalized tribe-based approach.

Maybe you’ll get a Chance to take a selfie with the ghost of Marilyn Monroe, or famous house known for stairs that go nowhere. Can you handle visiting or even staying in any of the most haunted places?

Enjoy some of the most haunted places and spookiest Halloween destinations:

Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel – Los Angeles, CA
The Hollywood Roosevelt is known for hosting many of LA’s most glamorous celebrities… both living and dead. Room 928 was where actor Montgomery Clift stayed while filming a movie in 1952, and where he still hangs his ghostly hat today. It’s also said Marilyn Monroe’s reflection can be seen in a mirror near the lower level elevator – perfect for an epic selfie if you can catch her in your shot.

The Drake – Chicago, IL
The “Woman in Red” is the ghost you should be on the lookout for at the Drake Hotel. According to legend, she ended her life here while attending a gala on New Year’s Eve 1920 after discovering her fiance in the arms of another woman. Her ghost is said to haunt all of the places she passed through that night: the Gold Coast Room where the gala was taking place, the Palm Court parlor where she discovered her fiance’s affair, and the roof from which she made her final jump.

Spaghetti Warehouse – Houston, TX
There’s no such thing as eating alone at the Spaghetti Warehouse. This restaurant is packed with both antiques (like eerie stained glass windows and a staircase from a European castle) and ghosts, including that of woman who who died of a “broken heart” after her husband fell to his death down an elevator shaft on the property, as well as a man who is said to pace a downstairs bathroom. If the stories are true, you may even feel a ghost tapping you on the shoulder while you dine – sit upstairs for a better chance of finding a spectral dinner date.

Peyton Randolph House – Williamsburg, VA
There have been over 30 mysterious and unfortunate deaths in this historic Colonial Williamsburg home since it was first constructed in the late 1700s, which means there are lots of angry ghosts hanging around waiting to totally creep out visitors.

Don Vicente de Ybor Historic Inn – Tampa, FL
Before it became a hotel in 1980, Tampa’s boutique Don Vincente Inn was a hospital for nearly a century. That means hundreds of people died on the site, many of whom have stuck around in spirit form. We hear room 305 is a favorite for the long-departed.

The Horton Grand Hotel – San Diego, CA
The Horton Grand is actually comprised of two former buildings that were once located in different parts of town, dismantled, and rebuilt as one hotel on the current site in the 1980s. The ghostly inhabitants include the (purportedly) friendly Ida Bailey, the owner of a brothel that once occupied the site, and Roger Whitaker, the ghost of room 309, who was reportedly shot – either by the father of his lover or by a creditor who had bankrolled his gambling habit – and killed in room 309 of one of the old buildings, and simply moved to the new location with the rest of the bricks and furniture.

Winchester Mystery House – San Jose, CA
See that stairway that leads to the ceiling? Or that door that opens onto a wall? The Winchester Mystery House is the product of the paranoia suffered by the widow of the inventor of the Winchester rifle. She feared the ghosts of those killed by the rifle would haunt her, so her building plan was designed to both appease and confuse these spirits. Visitors still report strange hauntings – we’d suggest hiding in the room with hidden doors to escape any ghosts you may encounter.

Lafayette Square – Washington, D.C.
Ghosts don’t appear exclusively in eerie spaces – some prefer to take in a little fresh air. It’s said President Andrew Jackson still takes up residence at the White House. When the mood strikes, he likes to get outdoors to take strolls through this park across the street.

Hotel Indigo San Antonio At The Alamo – San Antonio, TX
Located across from the Alamo, it should come as no surprise that the Hotel Indigo has some haunted history. The basement, where conference rooms and the gym are now located, was where a number of Alamo-era cannons were found during construction. In addition, it’s where, it is said, many ghosts still lurk.

Granary Burying Ground – Boston, MA
If you want to find ghosts, heading to a cemetery is a no-brainer. But with the number of burying grounds in Boston, you can afford to be picky. The Granary has been collecting bodies and their lost souls for nearly four centuries. Therefore if you’ve ever dreamed of “meeting” some of the most important figures in American history – from John Hancock and Samuel Adams to Paul Revere and his horse – this is the spot to come.

1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa – Eureka Springs, AR
This creepy building has been, at times, a resort for the rich and famous. Also a college, a hospital run by Norman Baker, a man named with no medical training, and, since the 1990s, a hotel. The ghosts at the self-proclaimed “Most Haunted Hotel” in America include a man who died during the building’s construction. This cancer patient roams the halls looking for her room key, two men in top hats, and a cat. You might also find yourself face to (ghostly) face with Baker himself. Plus, it’s probably best not to ask him for medical advice.

Restaurant 1833 – Monterey, CA
The building that now houses one of Monterey’s best restaurants was once the home of James Stokes. He  was a doctor who accidentally caused the death of a California governor because of a misdiagnosis.  As an investigation would later reveal, he turned out to not really be a doctor at all. Perhaps because of some unfinished business left on earth, or because of the new restaurant’s stellar food and apothecary-themed bar menu (inspired by the mad “doctor” himself). Finally,  Stokes never quite managed to leave his former residence and is available for consultations from beyond the grave.

Trendy Artsy Hotels – W Miami, Hotel Revival and Quirk Hotel

A travel trend that has become more popular are artsy hotels. By integrating art, U.S. hotels not only have strong ties to the art world, but also engage customers by acting as art galleries themselves. Have you considered artsy hotels in your next travel plan?

The goal is to make art and culture more accessible to all who visit. We are pleased to share information on the art offerings and programs from W Miami in Florida; Hotel Revival in Baltimore, Maryland and Quirk Hotel – a Destination Hotel in Richmond, Virginia. These incredible artsy hotels are clearly setting a new standard.

W Miami
ocated in Miami’s vibrant Brickell neighborhood, boasts a partnership with the Smith Davidson Gallery. It features several works of the gallery’s mixed media art throughout various areas of the hotel. Upon check-in, the W Insider asks if guests are interested in going on a personal tour of the hotel’s art collection. They have the option of purchasing the pieces, which can run up to $23,500. Featured artists in this rotating collection include American-born Paul Rousso, South African-born Gavin Rain and Federico Bianchi and Giuseppe Linardi, both from Argentina.

Quirk Hotel
As a Destination Hotel, this boutique, art-centric hotel is located in an Italian Renaissance building originally built in 1916. Initially as the J.B. Mosby Dry Goods Store, it’s situated in the rising destination of Richmond, Virginia. The luxury hotel offers a carefully curated, artistic experience that showcases distinctive art throughout the property’s 74 guest rooms and suites. In addition, the Maple & Pine restaurant and bar, rooftop terrace bar and lounge and public meeting spaces are also available to guests.

Blending sophistication, flare and humor, the hotel’s guestrooms and suites take a subtle riff on the husband/wife dynamic of the owners. The luxurious rooms culminate in the perfect marriage of masculinity and femininity. As a result, each room features a palate predominately composed of warm-pink, gray, walnut brown, white and black. Therefore it allows alternating pink and gray colored walls (Benjamin Moore’s “Love and Happiness” and “Gray Owl” respectively) to serve as the idyllic backdrop. Local artwork created by artists both locally and nationally is proudly hung. It also makes it easily available for travelers to purchase if they so choose.

Hotel Revival
The property is Baltimore, Maryland’s newest boutique hotel in the historic Mount Vernon neighborhood. The 101 West Monument Street address where Revival stands has a rich past rooted in art. The site was once a private mansion owned by art enthusiast Mary Elizabeth Garrett. Hence, her home also served as the city’s first public art museum, housing the Baltimore Museum of Art collection until its new gallery was completed in 1929. In a nod to this history, a prominent art narrative is woven into Revival’s design and guest experience. Below is an outline of the many partners, artists and artisans who are represented inside the hotel.

Philadelphia-based Paradigm Gallery curated an eclectic collection of artwork, from both emerging and established local artists. This art is used for guest rooms and public spaces. For example, a California-based remix artist, who customized a unique large-scale, collaged wallpaper, comprised of hundreds of digital photographs. The art is displayed in the hotel’s prominent, open stairwell. Baltimore Artstar  hand painted a floor-to-ceiling mural depicting the neighborhood’s historic “Howard’s Woods” region that encompasses the lobby.

Paradigm Art Company is helping to bring local partnerships to life by curating artwork throughout the hotel. The goal is to make art and culture more accessible. Therefore, thanks to this art program, Hotel Revival will house exceptional pieces by a variety of artists. You can see them in both the public spaces and guest rooms, including those of several Baltimore artists which I have listed out below. Paradigm has gone so far as to coordinate the in room art selection. Works are placed by particular artists’ in rooms that end in like numbers, so that guests can book rooms depending on the type of art they like.

Beth Hoeckel is a multidisciplinary artist and illustrator based in Baltimore MD. Her main area of expertise is in the medium of collage. Beth began her first widely-known series of collages in 2010 and has been a full-time freelance artist since 2012. Over the past 5 years her work has been exhibited around the world and published in many prestigious books and magazines.

Baltimore Print Studios is a public-access letterpress and screen printing studio. It’s located in the Station North Arts & Entertainment District in Baltimore, Maryland. The studio is run by husband and wife team Kyle Van Horn and Kim Bentley. Both have adopted their love for printmaking over many years of occasional classes, personal projects, and commercial work.

Chris Stain was raised in the working-class neighborhood of Highlandtown in Baltimore, Maryland. His interest in art began with NYC subway graffiti in the mid-1980s. Having learned printmaking methods in high school, he eventually shifted his technique toward stenciling. Chris adapts images from photographs and works with spray paint, stencils, and paper to create interior/exterior works. He seeks to convey an authentic contemporary document that illustrates the triumph of the human spirit. Hence that spirit is experienced by those in underrepresented urban and rural environments.

Baltimore Artstar is a Baltimore based decorative painting and faux finishing company founded by Kelly Walker in 2002. Artstar specializes in hand-applied, atmospheric finishes. The art captures and enhances the charm of any environment with sophisticated drama. Artstar has hand painted a floor-to-ceiling mural depicting the neighborhood’s historic “Howard’s Woods” region that will encompass the lobby.

Mary Ellen Martinez has contributed woven works to the hotel space. Fiber art is HOT right now! And it’s not going away anytime soon. As a result, it’s why Paradigm has included embroidered and woven works in Revival.

Jasjyot Singh Hans has six original pieces commissioned for Revival. He is originally from Delhi, but moved to Baltimore to attend MICA. Hans is still Baltimore-based, after receiving his MFA. A proponent of beauty in all colors, shapes and sizes, Hans works directly reflects. His beautiful art pieces speak to body image issues, bullying and homosexuality.

The Floating, Arctic Bath Hotel and Spa – That’s VIP!

Looking for a truly VIP experience? Scheduled to open soon, the new floating Arctic Bath Hotel and Spa in Sweden is amazing. This luxury hotel is like no other in the world.

What makes the Arctic Bath Hotel and Spa so unique is the how it directly relates to Sweden’s weather extremes. During the warm summer months, the hotel floats on the scenic Lulu River. During the harsh winter months, this luxury hotel actually freezes into the river. That is literally being at one with nature!

Sweden is a magical travel destination. It borders both Norway and Finland. From the scenic islands in Stockholm, the rugged western coast and frozen lands to the north, there is so much Sweden has to offer. If you desire a VIP experience, then plan your next luxury vacation with a stay at the new Arctic Bath Hotel and Spa.

The Arctic Bath Hotel and Spa is the result of collaboration between Travel experts Off the Map Travel, plus the group that developed the fascinating Treehotel in Harads, Sweden. The new floating hotel and spa provides the perfect locale to view the world famous Northern Lights. In addition, the hotel is designed after how fallen trees were transported down the Lulu River. Furthermore, the process of timber floating was popular many years ago.

The Arctic Bath project was developed by Kent Lindvall, Per Anders Eriksson, Robert Lundqvist, Patrik Jonsson and AnnKathrin Lundqvist. where the Treehotel takes the use of lumber in the air, the Arctic Bath Hotel and Spa is designed with a basis of water. The hotel’s goal was to use minimalist furniture and building design. Their success is a vision of beauty that naturally blends into its outdoor surroundings.

Jonny Cooper is both the founder of Off the Map Travel, as well as an Arctic travel expert. Mr Cooper was quoted, “The circular shape of spa and Arctic Bath creates a protected environment sheltering guests and creating a haven to relax and soak up the local Arctic environment. You can experience the spa bath and stay overnight in a room that will float or be frozen into the ice, depending on the season. This will be a one-of-a kind Arctic experience. Although all seven buildings will be securely anchored in place they are freely floating in water or frozen into ice.”

Although the completion date of the new Swedish hotel is a few months away, you can make reservations now. Customers who do get a chance to stay, will be treated to a rare mixture of luxury amenities and the beautiful environment. The open middle potion of the Arctic Bath is designed for sunbathing and ice bathing. Plus, it’s a prime location and ideal way to experience the Northern Lights or star-lit skies.

Take an invigorating dip into the spectacular bath. Following a traditional Arctic method, plunge into the cold-water. The water is kept at a chilly 39 degrees Fahrenheit. But don’t be discouraged. Next, combine it with the warmth of the sauna and spa. A special technique was developed to allow the center of the bath to remain open even during winter.
