An agreement was recently signed with UAE-based Meydan Group. They will offer both technical services and manage the new luxury beachfront resort. Meydan Group is a top development company offering both large scale mixed-use leisure and urban developments in Dubai. The Corinthia at Meydan Beach will be designed and operated by Corinthia Hotels. The location of the new luxury property will be on the site of the previous Meydan Beach Club.

The Corinthia at Meydan Beach will be comprised of both a hotel and private residences. The luxury property will feature 300 guest rooms and suites, plus 60 high-end serviced apartments. The current schedule for completion of the project is 2019. When done, it will offer awesome views of the Persian Gulf.

Mohammed Al Shehhi is the Meydan Board Director and was quoted, “We are very happy to have appointed Corinthia to operate our new luxury hotel under construction at Meydan Beach. Our core business is the global management of horse racing, as well as large scale mixed use real estate developments in Dubai. A recent study completed by by Ledbury Research, has determined that the Middle-Eastern sovereign state of Qatar is world’s fastest growing luxury market.

The Ledbury Research report is titled “Global Luxury Hotspots” and announced that Qatar took the top spot as the world’s top 20 “fast-growing, frontier markets” for the luxury industry.

It may not be a surprise to many, but the Middle East with its vast natural resource reserves took the top three positions. The United Arab Emirates took second place and Saudi Arabia was ranked third in the luxury market survey.

Qatar has a relatively small population of only 2 million people, but just 250,000 are citizens.

Qatar was proud to have just held the World Luxury Expo and will be hosting the Football World Cup in 2022.

Nicola Ko is the senior luxury analyst at Ledbury Research and was quoted, “The Mall of Qatar is currently being built however, and with infrastructure to be improved in the run-up to the 2022 World Cup, the luxury industry has significantly more potential to grow in the country.”

Qatar has a history of investing in the luxury industry. It owns majority stakes in landmark department stores Harrods and Printemps in London and Paris, plus in Italian fashion brand Valentino.

To become even further entrenched in the luxury market, Qatar is also currently developing its own luxury label, titled “Qela.”

It’s still one of the most highly kept secrets in the travel industry. But the iconic QE2 (Queen Elizabeth 2) luxury cruise ship which is currently moored in Dubai, is scheduled to set sail next year and be introduced as an all-suite luxury hotel.

According to Emigrates 24/7, the QE2 luxury liner will be moored somewhere in the Far East, but it’s actual and final destination is a top secret.

The QE2 will depart Dubai on October 18 and should reach Singapore on November 1. The cruise ship will then leave for a shipyard in China to finish its restoration.

The luxury cruise liner will morph into a spectacular, 400 all-suite hotel. For those who desire an extended stay, there will be larger suites to meet that longer, onboard need.

Khamis Juma Buamim is the Chairman of Drydocks World and Maritime World and stated that approximately $90 million (Dh330 million) will be spent on refurbishing QE2. To date, seven of the ship’s nine total engines have been overhauled.

Buamim was quoted, “Dubai owns the QE 2 and will never sell it. People can rent or even buy these suites. Prices haven’t been finalized but these will be really expensive.”

The QE2 has long been regarded as the last of the great luxury liners. Over the 39 years of service for Cunard, she carried 2.5 million passengers, sailed almost six million miles and finished 806 trans-Atlantic crossings.

Istithmar World is a subsidiary of Dubai World and bought the 293-metre long vessel from Cunard for about $100 million in June 2007. QE2 officially retired in Dubai back in November of 2008.

Initially, the luxury ship was planned to stay in Dubai as a luxury hotel and part of a maritime center. Now those plans have changed, but don’t rule out the possibility that the ship won’t eventually return to Dubai.

Khamis Juma Buamim continued, “Dubai is the home of QE2. You never know it may come back.”

It appears there finally is a plan for the iconic Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2) cruise liner after all.

The Queen Elizabeth 2 cruise ship was originally launched way back in 1967. The luxury QE2 ship began service in 1969 and since has made over 26 round-the-world voyages.

The QE2 was purchased in 2007 by Istithmar, which is large investment company that’s owned by the government of Dubai. The estimated purchase price for the luxury ship was £64 million or about $100 million US.

It was announced that Dubai is moving toward turning Queen Elizabeth 2 cruise liner into a floating hotel.

Since the purchase, the future plans of the QE2 were up in the air. Initially, the goal was to completely overhaul the ship and turn it into a luxury hotel. Those plans were shelved due to the global recession which really hit hard Dubai’s economy.

Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, chairman of Istithmar stated that the company became aware visitors to Dubai desired to see the QE2 remain in its originally look. Due to that, there are no major changes expected. He was quoted, “QE2 is without a doubt one of the wonders of the maritime world, and is easily the most famous serving liner in the world today.”

Since the Queen Elizabeth 2 arrived at Port Rashid, it quickly became the emirate’s hottest tourist attraction. It’s expected to take about 18 months for the conversion to be completed. When done, the QE2 will become a luxurious, 300-room floating hotel!

According to Bloomberg, Istithmar is currently in talks with three hoteliers, including Jumeirah Group, to manage the property.

Dubai is clearly a hub of luxury yachts, as almost one third of the world’s super-yachts reside in Dubai.

Given the global recession, Dubai’s economy was not immune. The luxury boat sector has experienced a drastic slow down that led to many luxury yacht owners trying to sell their boats to pay off other debt.

Hopefully with the worst behind us, the outlook for big-ticket luxury goods is improving and these luxury mega-yachts will return being in high demand by the world’s most wealthiest people.

The incredible Dubai boat show hosts the largest get-together of  Superyacht Builders Association (SYBAss) members in the show’s long history. Some of the largest boat constructors planning to attend include: Amels, Benetti, Burger Boat, Heesen Yachts, Oceanco, Sanlorenzo and Trinity Yachts.

Grant Burgham, an exhibitions director at the Dubai World Trade Centre, which is the organiser of the event, said the Middle East was home to some of the world’s highest net-worth individuals, and the market was “perfect” for the high-end marine leisure industry for super-yachts, generally defined as boats longer than 23 metres, and “giga-yachts” – those more than 100 metres in length. “It is an excellent opportunity for the super-yacht buyers in this region to connect with the elite of the industry.”

The 2011 Dubai International Boat Show is expecting to have more than 25,000 visitors during its five-day run.

That’s great news for Middle east marinas. Many new ones are being built to accommodate a surge in luxury yachts.

Show organizers stated that more than US$35 billion (Dh128.54bn) worth of waterfront marina projects are either underway or planned across the entire region.
