The Cromwell – Las Vegas Strip’s First Luxury Boutique Hotel and Casino

The Cromwell is scheduled to open on the world famous Las Vegas strip this spring. It will become the first luxury boutique hotel and casino located on the strip.

Located on one of the busiest intersections found on the Las Vegas Strip, The Cromwell will offer 188 luxury rooms and suites, a hotel lobby bar, lounge, restaurant by Giada De Laurentiis, day and nightlife venues by Victor Drai, plus a 40,000 square foot casino.

The Cromwell hotel and casino will offer multiple vantage points that showcase fantastic views of the bustling Las Vegas Strip and is sure to become of the most luxurious hotels in Sin City. It’s ideal for those who desire a luxury lifestyle.

The resort’s decor is a combination of both vintage with modern, inspired from the Coste Hotel in Paris. You’ll find black Parisian-style awnings as well as gold fixtures adorning the windows.

The boutique hotel experience is evident once you enter from the Porte Cochere. It’s a mix of Parisian flare and whimsical, modern details that will definitely dazzle. The lobby of the hotel will remind you of parlor from the past, including accessories and bookshelves that are lined with leather bound books.

All 169 hotel rooms and suites at The Cromwell were designed like Parisian loft-style apartments and include distressed hardwood flooring and vintage luggage motif furnishings. The rooms use French provincial styling lighting and luggage truck style furniture.

The stylish bathrooms at The Cromwell are decorated with black and white, mosaic tiled shower walls which double as an artist’s canvas displaying miscellaneous English-French phrases.

Foodies will love GIADA, the property’s restaurant. It will offer al fresco dining and a beautiful exhibition kitchen that will showcase fresh pastas that are made daily by hand and a signature antipasto bar. This is a first for any Italian eateries found today on the Strip. GIADA at The Cromwell will utilize the freshest ingredients available to provide a new spin on the traditional Italian cuisine. All the while staying true to classic, customer favorites.

GIADA can accommodate 260 guests and with its 2nd floor location plus automatic retractable windows, can offer excellent views of the famous Bellagio fountains, Caesars Palace as well as Bally’s Grand Bazaar Shops. GIADA will be open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. A private dining room is available for larger parties.

Restaurant chef Giada De Laurentiis was quoted, “I’m so excited, not only to be opening my very first restaurant, but to be one of the first female chefs on the Las Vegas Strip. My goal for this restaurant is to be able to share a part of my life, my culture and my family with every guest. I want each person to feel like they’re entering my home, receiving a big welcoming hug and enjoying a fantastic Italian meal.”

For some of the best socialization in Las Vegas, Drai’s is the place to be. Victor Drai is the nightlife innovator that has been the driving force of some of the most memorable nightlife experiences in Sin City. The Cromwell is very proud to be working with him. Drai’s After Hours will offer guests the hottest nightlife experience on the Strip. Don’t be surprised to run into an A-list Hollywood or music industry celebrity like Kanye West, Jay-Z, or Justin Bieber.

Drai’s will introduce an incredible rooftop pool, day club and nightlife venue. Drai’s Beach Club – Nightclub will definitely lift the Las Vegas day and nightlife scenes to a new level. With both a stylish and spirited pool experience, party away and beat the Las Vegas heat.

Looking Back at Caesars Palace – Las Vegas

      Caesars Palace - Las Vegas

Jay Sarno owned a chain of “cabana” motels across the U.S. and looked at Las Vegas as his place for expansion.

Back in 1962, Jay Sarno used a $10.6 million loan from Teamsters Central States Pension Fund, to begin construction of an elegant Las Vegas resort. Caesars Palace was built on a 34-acre piece of property.

Initially, the Vegas resort was to be named the Cabana Palace. It next changed to the Desert Palace, then finally Caesars Palace.

Sarno went to the nth level of detail to model after the ancient Roman time period. Sarno included everything form the traditional Roman decor, toga-like waitress costumes, the hotel logo, the parchment-like desk stationary, matchbooks and business cards with simulated burnt edges.

Building the mighty hotel did have its share of construction problems. One notable one was when builders hit water during the building of a planned underground parking lot. Using coverts to divert the water, building eventually resumed but sometime later, the underground parking plan was abandoned.

Inside Caesars was a very large casino that seemed to go on forever. The casino offered a shallow oval-shaped dome hanging low over the gaming pit. Sarno felt this design created relaxation. The casino offered no windows and the ceiling was blacked-out. Away from the massive casino, a variety of retail shops, restaurants, lounges and corridors awaited the hotel’s patrons. Down one corridor was the impressive Circus Maximus, the resort’s main showroom.

Caesars Palace opened on August 5, 1966, offering visitors a mighty 14-story, 700 room resort to Las Vegas.

There have been many memorable moments held at Caesars Palace. One that was legendary for years to come occurred on December 31, 1967. That was when Evel Knievel failed in his attempt to jump over the famous Caesars’ fountain in his motorcycle.

As the hotels expansion continued in 1973, Del Webb Corporation built a 16 story, 333 room high-rise tower that finished the following year. Then in 1979, a 22-story tower was completed.

To finish what his famous dad couldn’t, Robby Knievel, son of Evel Knievel, did make the jump over Caesars’ fountains on April 14, 1989.

Caesars palace has continued to grow and expand, adding more rooms, casino space, fine dining and luxury shopping.  A visit to the Caesars Palace Forum Shops is a must.

The Vdara Hotel & Spa is a short walk from another new hotel-casino called Aria. Vdara is also approximately 100 feet from the entrance to Bellagio’s south tower.

Jim Murren is the Chairman and CEO of MGM Mirage. During a recent press event, Murren stated, “We are incredibly proud to offer the world this first taste of all that CityCenter will bring to the Las Vegas Strip. Travelers will finally find in Las Vegas what they find in other great cities around the world – spectacular architecture, culturally significant art, great public spaces, sophisticated hotels, unique restaurants and incredible amenities. We look forward to unveiling all of this and more as the month unfolds.”

“It was designed to complement Aria, not operate as an extension of Aria,” McBeath said. “It has its own style, own flavor and its own personality. We really believe the Vdara brand is going to be the sleeper of CityCenter.”

Vdara is categorized as a condominium hotel. This means the hotel’s units can be bought and placed into a rental program where they can then be leased as hotel rooms when vacant by their owners.

End of An Iconic Era – Sahara Hotel and Casino Closing

Sahara Hotel and Casino- Las Vegas
      Sahara Hotel and Casino

Another iconic hotel has closed on the famous Las Vegas Strip – Sahara Hotel and Casino.

Last Monday, the Sahara Hotel and Casino closed its doors for good.

The Sahara will always be remembered as one of the Rat Pack’s favorite hangouts. In addition, the Sahara was the hotel Elvis Presley once stayed during his filming of the hit movie “Viva Las Vegas.”

After being open for over 59 years and offering $1 hot dogs and $1 blackjack, the Sahara Hotel and Casino will no longer be offering the best rates on the The Strip.

In the past, as older casinos (e.g. Stardust, Boardwalk and Landmark) have been closed and demolished, new developments have taken their place with more glitz and glamor. The future of the Sahara site reminds a big question mark.

As the end neared, visitors to the Shara walked through the casino and bought up a variety of souvenirs at the gift shop and tried their luck gambling one last time.

Over the six decades the Sahara Hotel and Casino was in business, a long list of celebrities have either stayed their or performed.

The casino’s first performance was actually from Ray Bolger, the scarecrow from “The Wizard of Oz.”

The Beatles also stayed at the Sahara when they performed in Las Vegas.
