Best Sauvignon Blanc Wines

White Sauvignon Blanc Wine Grapes

Looking for the best Sauvignon Blanc Wines?

You couldn’t go wrong with these two fine choices. The Mollet Florian Sancerre Roc De L’abbaye 2007 from France’s Loire Valley, and Mahi 2007 from Marlborough, New Zealand

Each is made from the sauvignon blanc grape and, very likely, vinified in similar ways (stainless steel tanks, no oak barrels–though there are minor exceptions from winemaker to winemaker).

Because of New Zealand’s cool, maritime climate and stony soils, you can expect the Marlborough sauvignon blanc to be the far more pungent of the two wines.

It should smell like fresh grass clippings from your lawn with a lot of passion fruit, grapefruit and other tropical fruit thrown in.

Expect the Sancerre to taste and smell a bit more like that salty, stony character you get in European sparkling mineral waters.  Full article

The Splendor of the Roman Colosseum

Roman Colosseum

The Roman Colosseum is the most famous Classical structure of Rome and one that virtually every visitor comes to admire. The structure is easily recognizable with its distinct design and architecture. When the elliptical stadium was first built, over 2,000 years ago, it was the first permanent amphitheatre of its time. It was marveled at for its grand size and structure and remains a template for the stadia that we see today.

A huge ellipse with tiered seating, the Colosseum was able to seat 50,000 viewers with standing room for an additional 10,000. There were 80 exits that allowed for efficient entry and exit of the large masses of people attending events. Gladiator events were most common, but the stadium was also used for other games or to watch criminals being attacked by wild animals.

No battle was neglected; at times the arena was filled with water to present naval battles. Entertainment at the Colosseum lasted for an impressive 450 years until the Roman Empire started weakening. The emperor Honorius ended the gladiatorial duels in 404 CE and animal shows ended by the sixth century. There are several theories to explain why the activities had ceased, but most likely it was due to lack of funding as games were expensive to produce.

The Colosseum was abandoned by the tenth century and soon became a home to houses and shops that were built within. Pieces of tufa, or stone, from the stadium were hacked off and used to build these new structures.

During the Renaissance, when Rome became more vibrant again, more stone was removed and used to build the new palazzis and numerous buildings around Rome. This constant breaking down of the walls and removal of stone is the reason that only half of the outer ring remains today. It wasn’t until restoration began in the eighteenth century that halted the destruction of the building and the focus moved to preserving the site’s remains.

Stylish Framed Sun Glasses

Balenciaga Glasses

Oversized sunglasses turned up in both spring and fall 2008 runway shows–they’ve been popular for several seasons now, as an alternative to aviators.

But how to make your retro-socialite/fashion editrix shades look new for 2008? Try squared-off frames – the thick plastic recalls the ’70s, but the cool gray tones speak directly to the millennial crowd.

Another of the season’s signatures may best be defined by what you don’t see: The obligatory bling is decidedly more low-key, with minimal logos, metal inserts, or (on Giorgio Armani shades) the lightest touch of Swarovski crystals.

Popular style of glasses are: Balenciaga, $330; Barneys New York, 888/222-7639. Gucci, $270; gucci.com. Giorgio Armani, $325; BOSS, $140; both at Solstice Sunglass Boutiques, solstice stores.com. Jimmy Choo, $295; Jimmy Choo boutiques.

Google Launches Chrome – Will the Browser Turn Golden?

Google logo

News out today that Google Inc. is releasing its very own Web browser, called Chrome. This is a long-anticipated move targeted directly at Microsoft Corp’s dominant browser, Internet Explorer. IE is used by about 75% of all Internet users.

This move by Google allows Chrome to facilitate Internet users easy access to its own market-leading search engine. Google’s lead in the lucrative Internet search market is also dominating. Their search engine processes nearly two-thirds of the Web’s queries.

Google is offering Chrome for free and will be available for downloading in more than 100 countries, but for computers running only Microsoft’s Windows operating system. Google says it is still developing versions compatible with Apple Inc.’s Mac computer and the Linux operating system.

This battle between two of hi-tech’s heavyweights – Google and Microsoft – has been going on for a while and will continue on for some time.

For the past several years, Google has been attempting to find ways of taking advantage of its search engine’s popularity,  trying to break Microsoft’s hold on how most people interact with personal computers.

To date, Google has concentrated on focusing on a bundle of computer programs, including word processing and spreadsheet applications, that Google offers as an alternate to one of Microsoft’s biggest money makers, the MS Office suite of products.

Do Expensive Wines Really Taste Better?

Expensive Red Wine Glass

Does our brain trick us when we have the choice between two wines – one more expensive than the other?  It seems that we tend to like the taste of the more expensive wine.

study from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and the California Institute of Technology discovered that when people were given two different bottles of wine and told that one cost $5 and the other $45 (in reality, both bottles were identical), the pleasure-center part of the brain became more active when the participants were drinking what they believed to be the more expensive bottle.

They also reported that the wine they believed to be more expensive tasted better.

Baba Shiv, one of the study’s authors and associate professor of marketing at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, previously found that people who paid full price for Red Bull energy drinks were able to solve more brain teasers than those who paid less for the same product. In other words, how much you pay for something can affect how you perceive it.

Beatrix Potter – Expensive Rabbits

Beatrix Potter The Rabbits' Christmas Party

A small drawing of a group of very civilized rabbits tickled the art world by selling for over $500,000 in London recently.

Expected to sell for about $80,000 at Sotheby’s in London, the illustration, ”The Rabbits’ Christmas Party: The Departure” by Beatrix Potter, author of The Tale of Peter Rabbit, instead found several buyers willing to pay over four times the pre-sale estimate.

In the end, the ink and watercolor drawing was sold to a British buyer for $578,700, the highest price ever paid for a book illustration at auction.

In the drawing, several rabbits are shown donning their coats, thanking their hosts and exchanging holiday kisses under a bunch of mistletoe hung from the rafters.

It is the final scene of a story written and illustrated by Potter in about 1892.  Full article
