Drive in VIP Style in this Amazing 2000 Chrysler Viper GTS R

Today is Father’s Day. For all the great dads out there, cheers to you! Let’s celebrate this great day and talk about a great car. The 2000 Chrysler Viper GTS R. Maybe by the end of today, you may actually be driven to own it. It’s for sale!

After his 1959 Le Mans victory with an Aston Martin DBR1, Carroll Shelby stops racing. He learns that AC Cars in England are delivering their vehicles without a suitable engine and in the fall of ’61, convinces them that his modified Fairlane engines would do the trick. He calls the car the Shelby Cobra.

The legendary Shelby Cobra is born from a binding handshake between Shelby and Detroit’s rising star, Lee Iacocca. When the Cobra debuts in 1962 alongside Chevrolet’s new Corvette, it performs a lap at Riverside a near four seconds faster. Pete Brock finds this roadster to be the best platform on which to build a world-championship GT coupe.

For the years when super sports cars filled the grid, they ruled racing. The classic era of motorsports had returned to the stage nearly forty years from when Le Mans began.

At the 1989 Detroit Auto Show, a new concept car is unveiled. It is intended to gauge public interest. Surprisingly, the concept is resoundingly approved even before the car show ends. Lee Iacocca calls the car an American classic. Next, he tells the Bob Lutz fifty-person team, “Go build the damn thing”. This iconic car will be absurd and it will be built. This amazing car will be named the Chrysler Viper.

Working tirelessly, Dodge pulls the cover off the production car just three years after uncloaking the concept. The word is that six cylinders came from one V8 and four from another to form the Viper’s beating heart. What a great story!

Despite features such as external door handles and windows, the closed car remains as rambunctious as the roadster. Dodge, showcasing GTS’s handling ability, positions the closed coupe for sales in Europe. Around this time, Chrysler approves the development of a racing program centered around the GTS.

2000 Chrysler Viper GTS R race car - Le Mans

Ford’s 1966 victory over Ferrari, in many ways was an astonishing accomplishment. As a result, the GT40 was built like a prototype racecar and allowed a large displacement motor. This was due to Ford producing a large enough quantity of vehicles to count as a modified road car. Hence, this division paved the way for the GT40 while defining how the sport would later work in the 1990s with BPR Global GT and the FIA GT Championship.

To adapt the Chrysler Viper for both European and North American circuits, Chrysler realized that they required outside assistance. Next, Enter ORECA. They would re-construct the cars in France. This was after receiving a basic chassis and integral components from Roush. The famed bodywork is from British engineering firm Reynard Motorsport.

Now the year is 1996. It’s Canaska/Southwind that debuts the competition Chrysler Viper GTS R, for the North American IMSA GT class GTS-1, at the 24hrs of Daytona. Their car number 84 spins and suffers rear suspension failure in the infield. The leading car, car number 98, places 29th overall and a dismal 225 laps behind the winner.

But it is in 1998 that the Viper’s dominance becomes imminent. At the hands of Justin Bell, Luca Drudi and David Donohue, chassis C7 and the ORECA team take the GT2 class win at the 24hrs of Le Mans finishing 11th overall. This finish went down in history as the first GT class win for an American-made car since Shelby’s Daytona Coupe in 1964.

The Chrysler Viper’s dominance is strengthened as ORECA wins all but one event in the 10 race schedule. That feat clinches another GT2 championship later that year. ORECA repeats their formula in 1999, by taking another Le Mans class win and GT2 championship. That makes two GT2 Championship winning seasons and 24hrs of Le Mans class wins two years in a row but can the Viper make it a third?

By 2000, Chrysler’s home rival Chevrolet raises the stakes with the Corvette C5-R. For the 24hrs of Daytona, the battle between the Factory Dodge and Pratt & Miller’s Corvette Racing teams for GTO class honor came down to the race’s final hour on Sunday morning. Chassis 21, driven by Olivier Beretta with Karl Wendlinger and Dominique Dupuy alongside, would take the outright victory over the best Corvette C5-R with a final margin of just over half a minute. Viper triumphs as the first American production-based car to take Daytona.

Built-in February of 1999 and prepared for the 2000 season, we are introduced to the vehicle offered here, chassis GTSR C31. It is one of the final Chrysler Factory Works Team cars and differs significantly over customer cars thanks to specialized skunkworks components. Throughout its tenure, GTS R C31 (C31) ran as both numbers 51 and 91.

The 12 hour endurance race at Sebring on March 18 marked the team’s first pursuit. The result is a class victory for C31, and a 1-2-3 finish for Viper Team ORECA making for a fabulous photo finish in a display of utter dominance by the now legendary team.

The ACO’s 24hrs of Le Mans in June 2000 would fit here. Karl Wendlinger, Olivier Beretta, and Dominique Dupuy drive C31 (as car 51) to Viper Team ORECA’s third straight class victory. The 333-lap finish is Viper’s best Le Mans performance to date. Given the serious competition that the Pratt & Miller’ C5R posed, the win is one of the most significant as the pressures to overcome another American-Born racecar deepened the Viper-Corvette rivalry.

Top 10 Iconic Cars in American Motoring History

American cars are bold and brash and are often at the forefront of the automotive industry. Without American ingenuity and foresight, modern cars wouldn’t have accessories such as car stereos, V8 engines, muscle cars, intermittent wiper technology or the electric starter. The American car industry has had a huge effect on the industry as a whole.

This article will celebrate that ingenuity by talking about the Top 10 iconic cars in American history. These cars that are known for their style, their innovation and their long lasting effect on the industry. These are the cars that truly changed the world for the better.

========================================================

Top 10 Iconic Cars in American Motoring History

Ford Model T car
10. Ford Model T
Produced between 1908 through 1927, the Ford Model T was initially designed as a “farmer’s car.” This vehicle was built for the masses and it meant to serve the needs of a mostly rural nation. However, it became much more than that. It initially was priced at $825 a vehicle, but through refinement of the mass production process, Ford was able to lower the cost of the vehicle to around $260. They were so popular that over 15 million were made and no one could compete against this cheap and sturdy “every man’s” car for quite a while.
========================================================

Duesenberg car
9. Duesenberg Model J/SJ
Produced between 1929 and 1937—during the Great Depression—the Duesenberg Model J/SJ was a car that was the exact opposite of the cars driven at that time. It was meant for those who had money during those hard economic times, which was a selected market indeed. However, what this car was able to do was to define a style that would influence all manner of vehicles all over the world. The “J” model had the innovative “convertible coupe” and the “SJ” model had super-charged engines that were capable of going as fast as 104 MPH. The “SJ” models were really the icons of the rich and famous—with American stars such as Clark Gable and Gary Cooper owning the only two short-wheelbase models—but unfortunately only 36 “SJ” units were manufactured in total. And although the company went out of business in 1937, the cars available today are still as beautiful as they ever were.
========================================================

Tucker 1948 car
8. Tucker 48
The Tucker 48 was invented during the 1940s because the big 3 auto manufacturers of the day—Ford, GM and Chrysler—failed to produce the innovations that wowed Preston Tucker. He sensed a genuine lack of ingenuity in the industry and set out to change it, which he did. With innovations such as a centered third head lamp that turned with the wheels (known as a cyclops eye); an independent four-wheel suspension; four-wheel disc brakes and a separate locking mechanism on the parking brake to prevent theft, this car was well on its way to automotive history. Unfortunately, thanks to several setbacks—such as a lackluster premier, a SEC investigation and an inability to get raw steel thanks to questionable political moves on the part of their competition, the company would build just 51 cars before they ran out of money and eventually went out of business. Today, these cars are worth over $1 million dollars apiece.
========================================================

Corvette car
7. Chevrolet Corvette
Known as the first American sports car, the Chevrolet Corvette is still a classic icon of America’s desire for speed. However, when it debuted in 1953, it was ironically very slow and unreliable. Still, it garnered enough interest for it to go into production and by 1955, Chevrolet had worked out the kinks. They had invented a car that was not only good looking but also had the performance that automotive enthusiasts wanted. But its style and its speed wouldn’t sync up until the 1963 Corvette Sting Ray Coupe was released. A car that had a split rear window, precision handling, a sleek magnesium alloy and aluminum body, and a powerful 327 V-8 300 HP engine. Today, they are manufacturing cars such as the C6 with ZR1 package, a car with a super-charged 6.2 L LS9 V8 engine that can compete with fast foreign cars at half or a third of these cars prices.
========================================================

El Dorado car
6. Cadillac Eldorado
First launched in 1953, the Cadillac Eldorado is a car that was manufactured for almost 50 years. It is also an iconic car that was loved for generations and driven by everyone from President Eisenhower to Elvis Presley. It had huge tail fins that are recognizable by just about anyone. From 1953 to 1967, this car was a rear-wheel drive car but was changed to a front wheel drive in 1967. In 1959, the tail fins grew even larger and complimented other additions such as dual bullet taillights, roof pillar configurations and deck lid beauty panels. During the 1970s, it began to lose favor with the American public—mainly due to its gas guzzling V8—but it has still earned its title among the most iconic American cars.
========================================================

Ford Mustang car
5. Ford Mustang
Based on the same platform as the Ford Falcon, and introduced at the 1964 World’s Fair, the Ford Mustang would go on to become one of the most recognizable American cars. It launched the “pony car” movement–a term used to describe compact, affordable and sporty performance oriented cars. This allowed it to tap into the imagination of America’s youth and at the same time become a symbol of it. Despite being manufactured at the same time as other pony cars—such as the Camero, and Firebird—the Ford Mustang still managed to sell more than both of them combined. While always fast and sporty, the real performance of the Ford Mustang wouldn’t be unleashed until the Shelby GT350 hit the scene in 1965. The Ford Mustang is now in its fifth decade and shows no sign of losing its competitive edge in the American muscle car market.
========================================================

Ford Shelby Cobra car
4. Shelby Cobra
The Shelby Cobra–also known as an AC Cobra or a Shelby AC Cobra—is the stepchild born of the deal between Ford and British carmaker AC. It was a deal brokered by racecar driver Carroll Shelby and resulted in huge American V8 engines being wedged into British sports car, the AC Cobra. The result was pure genius. Known for their huge leg pipes and flared fenders, the 427 Cobra would go on to become the consummate car of the 1960s. Unfortunately, their run would be short lived and production would eventual end in 1967.
========================================================

Pontiac GTO car
3. Pontiac GTO
The Pontiac GTO is an iconic vehicle built between 1964 and 1974. It was originally named after Ferrari 250 GTO. It would become the signature car for GM during the 1960s and eventually the ideal image of the American muscle car—a car that was light but had a lot of power. Today, the “Judge”, as it is otherwise known, will remain an iconic American car that will continue to live on in our memories of late night cruising, street racing and burnt rubber.
========================================================

Jeep Wrangler car
2. Jeep Wrangler
The Jeep Wrangler is a modern descendant of the Willys-Overland Jeep that was commissioned for the United States military during World War II. By the end of the war, more than 700,000 Jeeps had been built. This gave American ground forces a distinct advantage. In fact, General Eisenhower said as much when he said, “The Jeep, the Dakota airplane, and the landing craft were the three tools that won the war.” Although Jeep is now owned by Chrysler and produces a wide range of different utility vehicles, it is quite clear that the Wrangler embodies the spirit of the first Jeeps and combines toughness and style with off-road maneuverability.
========================================================

Tesla car
1. Tesla Model S
The Tesla Model S has shown that America still has some manufacturing flair in its arsenal. This car wouldn’t have came into existence without the entrepreneurial spirit that made this country great and it has changed the conversation about electric powered vehicles. They are no longer the stuff of imagination, but are here and real–made of American steel and forged by American ingenuity. And by making the car one of the quickest American sedans ever built, going 0-60 in just over 3 seconds, the manufacturer has shown that it is not only environmentally responsible but cool as well.

Imperial Palace Auto Collection

Imperial Palace Auto Collection Las Vegas

The Auto Collections at the Imperial Palace in Las Vegas is home to one of the world’s largest and finest collection of antique, classic, muscle and special-interest cars in the world.

As you enter the Imperial Palace Auto Collection, the sign reads ”No longer just a museum, but a place where the vehicles are actually available for purchase,”

The Imperial Palace Hotel – Casino dedicated a whole floor of its parking garage, added carpeting, and installed lighting to create a showroom for vintage cars.

The twist is although the Imperial Palace Auto Collection charges an admission fee, similar to a museum, the primary focus is displaying the many vintage cars for collectors to buy.

A big worry for a car collectors is having enough auto insurance to cover their pricey purchase. Put your worries to rest, there’s even a kiosk advertising Classic Collector Car Insurance.  It doesn’t get any more commercial than that folks.

Years ago, the Imperial collection used to showcase Adolf Hitler’s car. The car was finally sold off. A woman at the ticket counter stated,  ”I could never look at it.  I was too scared.”

For the true car enthusiast, take your time and check out all the vintage cars.  If you feel urge and find something you like, just go ahead a purchase one.

And there are a lot of successful single female executives and entrepreneurs. ”

This trend of women obtaining record levels of wealth is clearly visible on our nation’s highways and city streets. Women can be found cruising along in high-end luxury cars like never before.

What are they driving? Aston Martin DB9 Volante, Bentley Continental GTC, Jaguar XK Convertible, Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class, and Prosche 911 Carrera  …. to name a few.  Full article

Top Luxury Cars Under $50,000

Plenty of cars costing less than $50,000 pack enough features and driving satisfaction to rival their ultra-high-dollar counterparts. Those that believe you have to spend big for a luxury car may turn up their noses at the autos on this list. That’s their loss.

Pay $37,175 for the BMW Z4 Roadster, and you can cruise around town in a two-seater roadster that allows you to automatically control the drop top while listening to your favorite tunes through a 10-speaker audio system.

The $35,605 Lincoln MKX crossover utility vehicle is loaded with standard features like heated, dual power mirrors with memory, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with genuine wood accents, and four-wheel disc brakes with an anti-lock braking system. Options include 20-inch chrome wheels, a panoramic roof, and a voice-activated DVD-based navigation system. The Volvo XC70, a $36,755 midsize wagon, is loaded with advanced safety features like hill descent control and full-length side curtain airbags.

To find others like them, we used data from Strategic Vision’s 2007 Total Value Awards. The market research firm measures classes of cars including reliability, warranty, strong anticipated resale value, durability, innovation, and dealership and ownership experience. Only cars that got a score of 700 out of a possible 1,000 were counted.

Vincentric, an automotive research firm, provided maintenance costs calculated over a five-year period. Vehicles with the lowest costs, which include oil changes, wheel alignments, and replacement wiper blades, made the list. Finally, we capped our list at cars costing $50,000; this allowed us to measure a wide range of vehicles, from coupes to large cars.

Behind The Numbers

The under-$50,000 segment is diverse. You can find an Audi A3 wagon with a starting price of $25,930 and a Saab 9-3 convertible beginning at $26,000. At the top end is a Land Rover SUV starting at $44,933 and the Mercedes SLK roadster with a base price of $46,000. Add in a few select options, and you can easily meet the $50,000 threshold.

There’s good reason the list is long. When Nissan (through Infiniti), Honda (through Acura) and Toyota (through Lexus) in the mid-’90s introduced models for the entry-level luxury buyer, they forced other carmakers to compete. Mercedes-Benz and BMW followed suit with the C-Class and 3 Series, respectively. Audi, Saab, Cadillac, and Lincoln also increased their offerings.

Their targets? Young professionals with high-paying jobs, those in high-income households, and empty nesters who are transitioning into a luxury vehicle. They found that these buyers were making their first or second luxury vehicle purchase. Upgrading to a luxury auto means sliding into plush leather seats, enjoying enhanced power features like a push-button engine starter and memory seating for two drivers, and rolling along on larger wheels.

“You are treating yourself with these vehicles,” says Stephanie Brinley, senior manager of product analysis at AutoPacific, a market research firm covering the auto industry. “It is reaching a level of maturity. You’ve reached a stage in your life where you want a little more luxury, and you can afford to purchase a vehicle with more amenities.”

Still, there’s a big difference between a $45,000 luxury car and an ultra-luxury car twice its price. Take the $86,000 Cadillac XLR convertible roadster. Its standard features include a V8 engine, a heated steering wheel, a high-tech navigation system, and a retractable hard top. Many of these are merely options in the under-$50,000 group.

Instead, these cars’ treats include standard features like electronic stability control or anti-lock brakes; stellar sound systems with multiple speakers; leather seats or high-quality upholstery; and a wider choice of options, like premium paint colors and electronic connections, like iPod and MP3 connectivity.

But let the buyer beware. Once you cross over into the luxury segment, you may never want to drive anything else.

What a CEO Drives, Says A Lot

What a CEO drives often reflects the type of person he or she really is.  Take conservative Warren Buffett for example.  He’s worth about $42 billion, but for years he drove a silver 2001 Lincoln Town Car with Nebraska license plates, titled: THRIFTY.

CEO’s obviously have high profile positions and what they drive likely communicates a lot about the person. A recent survey of 3,000 people, found that only about 10% did not know what vehicle their chief drove.

“Of all the products in the world, cars are the most reliable representation of an individual’s personality,” says Golden Gate University psychology chair Kit Yarrow.  Full article

The Most Expensive Car in the World

When you push a car past 180mph, the world starts to get awfully dizzy and a little bit frightening. When you go past 200mph it actually becomes blurred.

Almost like you’re trapped in an early Queen pop video. At this sort of speed the tyres and the suspension are reacting to events that happened some time ago, and they have not finished reacting before they’re being asked to do something else. Full article
