Weight Watching, No Longer Just for Women

Weight Watcher Fit Man

Worrying about their bodies is no longer exclusive to women.  It seems that men are becoming just as concerned and increasingly aware of their weight and overall looks as women.

Eating disorder expert Dr. John Morgan, the head of the Yorkshire Centre for Eating Disorders, says that many young men suffer “extreme distress” over the appearance of their body.

The preliminary results of his research, which was carried out on male students aged 18 to 25 at Surrey University and is due for publication next year, found that one in five worry about their physiques.

For every man with an eating disorder, another ten desperately want to change the way they look. “One in five men have some degree of quite extreme distress,” he says.

A study conducted by ICM for Norwich Union in 2006, found that 36 per cent of men exaggerated how much weight they could lift in a gym. Also, one of every five men lied about his own body weight.  This behavior was once considered solely a female preserve.  Read more

Trump International Hotel & Tower – Most Expensive Dubai Penthouse

Palm Jumeirah Resort Dubai

Breaking property records is one thing, but when the property happens to be in Dubai, it’s another ball game entirely.

The AED contract for the construction of the spectacular 62 storey tall Trump International Hotel & Tower on Palm Jumeirah was announced earlier this month and with pre-sales of some properties fetching as much as $3000USD.

Real estate developer Nakheel and the Trump Organization expect that the tower’s exclusive penthouse will break property records in Dubai.

The 270 meter tall design which features two towers that merge at the 40th floor will include 378 hotel rooms and suites, 385 condominiums, 12 townhouses, 45,000 square feet of retail and 60,000 square feet of office space along with a private beach and super-marina.

Public sales of the residences began on June 23 and Donald J. Trump himself has already reserved an apartment in the Tower which is expected to be completed in May 2011.

To be constructed in a joint venture between Al Habtoor / Murray & Roberts, the Tower will be the centerpiece of the 560 hectare Palm Jumeirah which is among the world’s largest man-made islands (the nearby The Palm Jebel Ali and The Palm Deira the only bigger ones).

To put the scale of this construction in perspective, the amount of sand and rock used is enough to build a two meter high, half meter wide wall that would circle the globe three times!

The stainless steel and glass Trump International Hotel & Tower will straddle the center line of Palm Jumeirah, offering residents and guests panoramic views of the Arabian Gulf in an ultra-luxurious setting.

The jewel in this crown will be the two expansive penthouse residences designed by renowned architect Kelly Hoppen. The Tower total of 399 freehold residential apartments will range in size from 890 to 7,500 square feet with options in one, two, three and four bedrooms.

The long list of high-end features includes interior design by BBG – BBGM, Norman Foster bathtubs, Boffi kitchens, Gaggenau appliances and complete home automation…. not to mention the three-story private Beach Club and adjacent super-yacht marina offering 70 slips with provisions for 30-150 meter vessels. Cutting It Close With the Hommage Damascene Razor

Damscene Razor from Hommage

Ah, leave it to the French. Hommage, the Parisian supplier of luxury grooming equipment, skincare and spa services for men, has developed a limited edition, platinum-sheathed straight razor using the same ancient layering techniques as the Crusaders’ swords. The price is an eye popping $30,000!

Called the Damascene Razor, this shaving blade is hand-forged in Germany with 128 layers of legendary Damascene steel, with a rose and torsion pattern. This process in the same arcane fashion used to forge Escalibur, as described by Sir Thomas Mallory in La Morte D’Arthur. The sheath is then plated in pure platinum, and treated to resist tarnishing.

The pricey razor comes in a lacquered gift box of Tanzanian anigré wood. The name Damascene is often attributed to the steel swords made in the vicinity of Damascus, Syria and first gained its mythical reputation during the medieval Crusades.

According to the company – Hommage, “the blade of a Damascus steel sword was said to be able to cut a piece of silk in half as it fell to the ground and was strong enough to cut through a rock without losing its sharpness.”

So gents, be careful and make sure you don’t cut off more than you want. But if used cautiouslt, now you can use it to get the world’s most expensive shave.

Most Expensive Office Real Estate in Dubai

Dubai Jumeirah Lake Towers

The idea that Dubai will soon boast the most expensive real estate in the world is not as absurd as it sounds.

All it takes is a modest extrapolation of growth trends for rentals in the Dubai International Financial Centre, and a continuation of the current cooling off in markets like London Prime and this is a fact.

Dubai’s office market continues to suffer from an acute shortage of space, with 98 per cent occupancy in the new financial zone, the Dubai International Financial Centre, which has been hugely successful in attracting global financial firms to the emirate.

The latest recruit this week is Thames River Capital, a boutique fund-of-funds investment manager based in Berkeley Square.

The latter told AME Info that rents in this prime London location had fallen by around 30 per cent and that the rent it had just agreed in Dubai was not far off the rent it had just paid for additional space in Mayfair.  Full article

Take Good Care of Your Eyes

Eye Care

Good eyesight is crucial, but are you doing all you can to protect your vision?

Whether you’re mowing the lawn, playing racquetball, or flying across the country, here’s how the experts say to take care of your eyes.

STARING AT THE SMALL SCREEN
All that time spent using computers and PDAs can lead to eyestrain, dry eyes, and blurred vision. To combat these problems, check your work station: Ideally, your monitor should be 5 to 9 inches below eye level. This brings your lids downward, maintaining the healthiest blink rate, says Susan Resnick, an optometrist in New York City. If you can’t move the monitor, measure the distance between it and your eyes, then consult your eye-care professional about the right pair of glasses for that distance, says Dr. Gail Royal, an ophthalmologist in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Also make sure there’s no glare on your screen. And obey the 20/20/20 rule: For every 20 minutes of screen time, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds to maintain your eyes’ focusing system.

IN FLIGHT
Airplane cabin air is very dry, so keeping your eyes moist is important. Direct air vents away from you, and use artificial tears once every hour, suggests Dr. Royal. But avoid drops that reduce red eye, because they constrict blood vessels. If possible, wear glasses during the flight. If you choose to wear contacts, look for a new class of lenses made with silicone hydrogel, a permeable plastic that allows more oxygen to reach the eyes. Resnick often recommends Acuvue Oasys because they have added wetting agents to help keep the eyes moist.

IN THE SUN
Did you know that UV rays can hurt your eyes as much as they hurt your skin? Overexposure can increase your risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, and pterygia, little bumps on the whites of the eyes. “Every 15 minutes outdoors—even on cloudy days—adds to the cumulative effect of radiation damage,” says Resnick. Make sure both sunglasses and contact lenses are UV-protective. (Even with contacts, though, you’ll still need sunglasses to protect the whites of your eyes.) Lenses should cover from the forehead down to the cheek and ideally wrap around the temple region, says Dr. Robin Vann, chief of comprehensive ophthalmology at Duke Eye Center in Durham, N.C.

IN THE DARK
Pupils enlarge at night, so any slight blur on the retina becomes exaggerated. Get a thorough eye exam to make sure you’re seeing clearly. When driving, minimize glare by looking to the bottom right of the road, use the night setting on your rearview mirror, and keep your car in tip-top nighttime shape (clean headlights, taillights, signal lights, and windows—outside and in). Also, move your eyes from the road to the dashboard and back again to avoid “highway hypnosis” and maintain a keen sense of depth perception. If you read in bed, make sure the light is bright enough that you can see the words without straining, but not so bright that you get a glare. A 60- or 75-watt bulb is best.

WORKING UP A SWEAT
Some 325,000 sports-related eye injuries occur every year—many resulting in permanent vision loss. More than 90% of those accidents could have been prevented with proper eyewear. Choose protective lenses designed for your specific sport. Look for polycarbonate lenses or a new material called Trivex—both are thin and won’t shatter. Check the product’s certification seal: It should meet the requirements of the American Society for Testing Materials, which vary for each sport. For outdoor sports, polarized lenses help you see more clearly.

Patriotism Is Always A Big Seller

C.H. Badger Wood carved eagle

John McCain and Barack Obama’s supporters aren’t the only ones cheering America these days. Art collectors are getting in on the act as well by sending auction houses a very important message: Patriotism sells.

Take the sale of a 5-inch-tall carved wooden eagle. At the end of August in Rockland, Maine, the small eagle carved around the turn of the last century and perched on two American flags sold for more than $60,000–over 10 times its pre-auction estimate.

The sale of the eagle was just one of the highlights of the three-day auction at James Julia Inc.

The other top seller was ”The Goddess of Liberty,” a life-size wood carving from the late 19th century. The sale price for this quirky piece of Americana was $143,750.  Full article

Wynn Las Vegas Golf and Country Club

Wynn Las Vegas Golf and Country Club

It’s sometimes hard to tell if that thing behind Wynn Las Vegas is a golf course or a CIA annex.

The staff treats Steve Wynn’s latest $500-green-fee course (he introduced that nice round number to Las Vegas golf with Shadow Creek, which he no longer owns) like it houses national security documents. Maybe the real dossier on weapons of mass destruction is buried under the fifth green.

Hey, it’s Vegas. Anything is possible.

The Wynn Las Vegas Golf and Country Club is the second collaboration of Tom Fazio, Steve Wynn and Mother Nature has resulted in 18 unforgettable holes. Right outside the resort’s back door.

That would explain the paranoia surrounding the Wynn Golf and Country Club. Pro shop attendant Heather Wicks made it seem like she was letting a few potential customers through the pearly gates when she allowed them to walk out onto the patio that overlooks the 18th green.  Full article

Matthew McConaughey – Surfer Dude

Matthew McConaughey Surfer Dude

It’s a first for Matthew McConaughey and good news for his adoring fans. In Surfer Dude, he’s shirtless for the entire film.

McConaughey’s role in the movie — a comedy about a champion of the long board who resists selling out to corporate America — wasn’t a difficult one for the laid-back actor to play.

Matthew McConaughey, who is often photographed on the beach, seemed to enjoy playing a soul-searching surfer. And it’s only a matter of time before his newborn son follows in his bare-footed steps.

Q: Congratulations on your three-and-half month old son Levi. Have you taken him surfing yet?

A: Not yet but he’ll be getting salty soon. Levi travels with his mom [model Carmen Alves] and me already. I want to get him out into the world. He’s outdoors as much as he is indoors. That’s how I was raised in the country. I like the city but I also want some space. And my boy is going to be out in the middle of it.  Full Interview

2008 Bentley Continental GTC Convertible

2008 Bentley Continental GTC Convertible

According to David Reuter, Bentley’s spokesman in the North America, “Our median buyer has a net worth of a little over $3 million,” Reuter said. “And that doesn’t include real estate holdings, just liquid assets.”

That buyer is also predominantly male, typically in early middle age, Reuter adds. And he “has three or four other automobiles, like a Ferrari or another British car.”

So what are these affluent buyers getting for a Bentley like the 2008 Bentley Continental GTC Convertible?

The answer is a lot more than they were before Volkswagen bought the brand a decade ago. The old, British-designed car had nothing to sell but high-quality materials and a mind-boggling amount of hand work.

From a technological standpoint, the cars were antediluvian. Their pushrod V-8 was designed before the Earth’s tectonic plates assumed their present positions.

The folks who design Volkswagens and Audis changed that. The test car was powered by a techy, twin-turbocharged, 6-liter V-12 that developed 552 horsepower. This power was dispatched to all four wheels by a six-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system featuring a Torsen center differential. Three rear-drive models use an extensively modified, turbocharged version of the old V-8.

“It’s a real car now,” Innaurato said. “It’s very well-engineered and styled, and performs well.”

And it does perform. Despite the fact, it weighs a morbidly obese 5,478 pounds, the big droptop gets from 0 to 60 in a factory-claimed 4.8 seconds, then finishes up at 195 miles an hour. The big guy is also surprisingly light on its feet in the corners.

While things have changed on the technological front, some things remain the same. The car is still built in Crewe, England, it still gets lousy gas mileage, and the materials and workmanship are still stunning.

Virtually all cars built with “leather seats” only have leather where it touches your body. The seat’s sides and backs are vinyl. The soft, exquisite hides used in the Bentley I drove covered the entire seat. They also covered the parts of the door panels and dashboard that weren’t devoted to beautiful burl walnut inserts.

When you opened the doors to reveal the front jambs, you found they weren’t the usual stamped steel. They were covered with the same saddle-stitched leather found on the dash.

The paint work on the tester was enough to make Rembrandt and Titian jealous. You get that kind of flawless depth by running the car through the paint shop three times, and hand-rubbing it between each coat.

In all, it took close to 150 hours to build this car, about four times the assembly hours on a conventional auto.

A paint job this magnificent left me haunted by the possibility of a door ding. I found myself looking for three contiguous empty mall parking spaces so I could put the Bentley in the middle one.

As much fun as I had driving this car and pretending I was rich, I was a little relieved when the Bentley boys took it back.  Story by: Al Haas at Phillynews.com.
