Hash House A Go Go – It’s Different

Hash House a_Go Go

If you are looking for huge portions, unique presentation, and unusual combinations, Hash House A Go Go, with their “Twisted Farm Food” is where you want to be!

The fun part of this dining experience is in trying to figure out how and what to eat on your plate. Try to imagine a pork tenderloin sandwich that has a standard sized bun perched under and over a tenderloin the size of a small turkey platter.

Hash House A Go Go, founded over ten years ago by Craig Beardslee and Johnny Rivera, claims to provide excellent service and entertainment while you dine. There is no question that it is very entertaining every time another meal is brought out from the kitchen.

Incredibly stacked plates of foods in strange combination, along with the most original plating this reviewer has ever seen, cause forks to drop, as other diners watch to see how creative you can be in attacking your dinner.

While it is intriguing to see the number of ways they use uncooked wheat pasta and huge lengths of rosemary to decorate a plate, neither are a welcome addition to your dining experience. This menu is not for those who do not love sage and rosemary, the scent of which seems to permeate every dish that is served.

Still, their food is fresh, and they definitely bake the best (and largest) buttermilk biscuit you will ever eat. Their biscuits and gravy are topnotch, and the griddled French toast is to die for…but only if you like thick, Amish style bread that has been dipped in cream flavored with banana and cinnamon, and then drizzled with pecan maple syrup!

This restaurant does not seat guests between 2:30pm and 5:30pm. Regardless of what allergies or preferences you have, they will not make substitutions, nor will they omit an item from a plate. If you are in the mood for a waffle at 9pm, you will have to take it with the sage battered chicken. And if you are allergic to rosemary, it will still be presented, skewered into your hamburger bun.

Breakfast & Lunch 7:30am-2:30pm
Dinner Monday-Thursday 5:30pm-9:00pm
Dinner Friday & Saturday 5:30pm-10:00pm
Closed Sunday Nights

Amazing Landmarks of London

London Eye

London, England is home to a large number of wonderful tourist attractions. It can often be difficult to know even where to begin once you arrive.

The rich history and amazing sights are almost never-ending. London has a lot to offer, but we’ve tried to identify just a few sights that are well worth the effort to see.

One of the first landmarks and one of London’s most modern, is the incredible London Eye. The vast ferris wheel of vision opened to the public in 1999. Despite a number skeptics who doubted the giant wheel would ever last, it’s gone on to become one of the world’s most popular tourist attractions.

No visit to London can be without a stop at one of the most famous London attractions – Buckingham Palace. Buckingham Palace is one of the most instantly recognizable buildings in the world. More than just a sightseeing marvel, Buckingham Palace is also the official residence of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh. Buckingham Palace is truly an architectural and visual delight, full of stunning works of art.

Another main attraction of London is St Paul’s Cathedral. It is a monument to the renaissance style of architecture, redesigned and rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren in 1668, just after the great fire of London. This stunningly beautiful cathedral is located at the top of Ludgate Hill. St Paul’s Cathedral proudly stands today as Britain’s most iconic building.

Although it’s graces the mighty Thames River, the victorian Tower Bridge has a dark and gruesome history. In the past, the Tower of London has been a prison and place of execution for London’s own people. The Tower of London was initially built by William the Conqueror as an attempt to keep London’s wild-side under control.

If you’re looking for a little artistic flair, then visit the impressive Tate Modern. Tate Modern is the modern art capital of England and displays works many famous modernist artists such as Picasso, Dali, Matisse, and of course … Andy Warhol.

London’s Natural History Museum was designed by Alfred Waterhouse and built in 1881 using Victorian building techniques. The museum was originally constructed to store the growing number of natural history exhibits in the British Museum. But due to the large amount of pieces, the Natural History Museum has grown into the enormous museum it is today.

Of course, there are numerous other landmarks to see while in fabulous London. Take the time to visit as many as you can and absorb the city’s rich history and British culture.

History of the Hawaiian Lei

Hawaiian Lei

The Hawaiian Lei is an image that most people associate directly to Hawaii. It’s a wonderful island greeting for arriving tourists as well as used by locals for many special occasions.

Be sure to treat yourself to one of the traditional single-strand leis, featuring beautiful, fresh local orchids. But what’s the history of the Hawaiian Lei?

The history of the lei dates way back to the time of ancient Hawaiians. They wore a variety of braided leaves, shells, native flowers, stones, feathers, and even bones to beautify themselves.

Ancient Hawaiians also offered these garlands to each other in addition to their gods as a tangible symbol of both their love and friendship. The lei was treasured and worn with pride by people from every age group.

Polynesians who had voyaged to Hawaii from nearby Tahiti, introduced the lei to the Hawaiian Islands. A lei was worn as a form of decoration, similar to how people wear jewelry today. They were also given in greeting or to honor the recipient.

Hawaii lei

The traditional flower lei, which is basically a garland worn like a necklace, is created by stringing together individual flowers into single or multiple strands. When completed, the ends are then tied together.

Leis are still carefully made by hand, weaving fragrant, colorful flowers and leaves together to create a work of art. Leis are worn on all special occasions and given to family and friends as gifts of love. Indeed, the lei is a symbol of Hawaii.

Each Hawaiian island has its own signature lei flower. In addition to the shells for Niihau and the red Lehua for the Big Island, Oahu favors the orange Ilima. Kauai uses a green vine and berry called the Mokihana and Molokai has the Kukui, the white blossom of the Candlenut Tree. Maui’s choice is the Lokelani, a small rose. The yellow moss, Kuanaoa, is the choice of Lanai.

Today, in addition to weddings and special ceremonies, flower lei are most often presented to honor birthdays and graduations. Islanders will also wear a lei on May 1, which is Lei Day in Hawai’i, and during the Aloha Week festivities that take place throughout the islands during the Fall.

The lei is also was used in more formal ceremonies. Beautiful Jasmine flowers or pikake are traditionally used in courtship and marriage.

Cotton Tree – Luxury Boutique on Cayman Island

Cotton Tree
Courtesy of: Cotton Tree

The Cayman Islands welcome a new luxury hideaway, cottage hotel – Cotton Tree.

The Cotton Tree is a boutique property and located on the northernmost point of Grand Cayman (ten minutes from the famed Seven Mile Beach), beautifully evokes the spirit of the Cayman Islands with its pastel-hued, plantation-style beach cottages just steps from the Caribbean Sea and lush garden setting of tropical flowers and avocado, guava, mango and cotton trees for which the hotel was named.

Owner Heather Lockington, a global traveler who was born in the Cayman Islands, has built her dream property in West Bay . “My inspiration for Cotton Tree,” says Lockington, “was the day when I was stopped on the beach by a family who asked for any places in Cayman other than traditional hotels where they can feel at home.”

After realizing that such a place didn’t exist she set about creating an authentic haven where guests could embrace Caymanian heritage. “I want people to understand the islands’ architecture, art, cuisine—basically, to learn about the essence of the Cayman Islands and its people.”

Cotton Tree consists of just four two-bedroom, beachfront cottages — ensuring privacy and intimacy —which measure 1,600 square feet and resemble fully equipped houses.

Highlights of the “ Caribbean chic” décor include classic contemporary furnishings, French doors overlooking the sea, black-and-white photos of old Cayman, 600 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets, and in the baths, full-sized Elemis products, a spa or rainforest shower and Jacuzzi tub.

There’s also three 42” plasma TVs, an iPod docking station, Wii, free WiFi, a laser printer in each cottage and a laptop which is available for guest use. Additionally, hotel services such as a reception/concierge, bellhop, housekeeping and turndown on request are also featured.

One of Lockington’s passions is gastronomy so Cotton Tree’s kitchens are truly state-of-the-art. Expect Kitchen Aid appliances, granite counter tops, high-end cutlery/cooking utensils and a French press coffee maker. The refrigerator is pre-stocked with breakfast items (organic eggs, juices, bread, cereal and local condiments) for guests who prefer to make their own or a continental breakfast can be delivered daily.

A personal chef can whip up gourmet meals accompanied by wines chosen by a sommelier, and Cotton Tree is a quick drive to Grand Cayman’s best restaurants.

Additional amenities include a freshwater swimming pool, fitness center and yoga and spa pavilions nestled among seagrape trees, perfect for a sunset massage. Guests can also experience activities hand-selected by Heather including biking to Barker’s National Park, bird-watching and art and culinary classes. “Whether you’re here for a wedding, a family vacation or a romantic getaway,” says Lockington. “Cotton Tree is the ideal spot to unwind and reconnect with nature in an exclusive setting.”

Cotton Tree  is now offering special rates of $665 per night, which is a savings of 30%. These rates are offered for the hotel’s first winter season, from now until April 15, 2010. For more information or reservations, please go to the Cottage Hotel.

Restaurant Guy Savoy – Caesars Palace

We tug open the temple like doors to Restaurant Guy Savoy and find the chef’s son, Franck Savoy, waiting on the other side with an enthusiastic greeting.

Like most big-name toques with Vegas restaurants, Guy Savoy visits only a few times a year, but his son moved here to oversee the restaurant.

The dining room of Restaurant Guy Savoy is minimalist luxe, almost like a gallery, with modern art and tables spaced for privacy but not isolation. It provides a rich juxtaposition to the food, which is a lush amalgam of consummate French techniques with contemporary flourishes.

Artichoke and black truffle soup, a Guy Savoy classic, satisfies as much from its heady aroma as its surprisingly delicate flavor, given the assertive nature of the ingredients. Crispy sea bass is also rapturously fragrant: Vanilla and ginger envelop the fish in a tango of sweet scents.

Accompaniments prove nearly as extraordinary as the dishes. Our server takes pains to explain the characteristics of each option on the champagne cart.

Types of breads are matched to featured seafood and meats: lemon confit bread for the sea bass; a chestnut variation for a course featuring foie gras with glazed chestnuts; bacon for poussin with fingerling potatoes and chanterelle mushrooms.

Wine pairings, particularly a toasty 1990 Henriot Champagne with black truffle risotto, marry poetically with the food.

I dined at Guy Savoy the night before Joël Robuchon, and honestly wondered how the latter could trump the former. It did, but only by a nose. In my version of the Michelin rankings, based on one meal, Guy Savoy hovers within close reach of the coveted three-star rating.

A confession (and a consideration when you’re counting your winnings): Both meals at Joël Robuchon and Guy Savoy reached into four digits. Were both worth it? For sworn food lovers, yes. If you’re feeling flush but not quite that gilded, consider the next two restaurants.
