History of Halloween – Holiday for Both the Rich and Poor

Nobody is too old for Trick or Treat. Halloween is timeless and doesn’t matter whether you’re a two-year old or an adult. Ghosts, goblins and scary spirits. Do you really know how Halloween originated and the true history of Halloween?

The history of Halloween goes back much further than most people realize. The roots of this occasion run deep in Gaelic history. ”All Hallows Eve” (originated from the Pagan festival “Samhain”) was first celebrated among the Celts of Ireland and Great Britain.

The festival of Samhain was an important time of year. It marked the end of the harvest period and began the transition towards winter. At the time, people believed this time of year was actually a meeting point for the world of the living and the world of the dead.

Then spirits can make direct contact with the physical world. People would wear creative disguises and masks, thought to please or imitate the mischievous spirits.

The history of Halloween was nothing like it is today. Trick-or-treating is a modern take on this tradition, though originally children were asking for blessings rather than sweets and money!

As October 31st approaches, Halloween now symbolizes crazy costume parties, pumpkin picking, haunted houses, hay rides, horror films, festive pranks and a big jump in candy and pumpkin sales!  It’s a crazy time for all.

Well then… read on. We’ve scoured the scary streets, turned over every gravestone and found something for everybody to keep you busy this Halloween.

So before you grab your gruesome mask or sexy devil costume and head out for that Halloween party, read on! Here’s a list of the best festivals, popular parties, scary haunted houses and wicked horror flicks to scare the living heck out of you!

Took 35 Years, But Stolen Stradivarius Violin Recovered

It’s been 35 long and frustrating years, but a stolen, Stradivarius violin has finally been recovered. The rare violin was stolen back in 1980 and was owned by a young, talented violinist named Roman Totenberg.

Although Phillip Johnson was a suspect right after the initial theft, the police were unable to pursue the lead due to a lack of evidence. The rare violin was taken from Totenberg’s office at Longy Music School in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

After Johnson had passed away, his ex-wife and new boyfriend discovered a locked violin case while doing some housecleaning. They broke the case lock and discovered the violin. There was a label that read 1734 and was made by Antonio Stradivari, who was the most famous violin maker ever.

Sadly, Mr. Totenberg will not personally enjoy the return of the missing Stradivarius Violin since he passed away from cancer at the age of 58.

Since Mr. Totenberg had received a $250,000 insurance settlement soon after the theft, an agreement was made in a U.S, federal court that if the $250,000 was repaid, the three surviving daughters of Mr. Totenberg would receive the valuable Stradivarius violin.

It’s been reported that there are less than 650 Stradivarius violins in existence today. Like thieves trying to resell fine art, it can be be extremely difficult to sell a stolen Stradivarius violin due to its rarity. Due it’s authenticity, the recovered violin could be worth several million dollars.

I expect we may see this particular Stradivarius violin appear at a high-end, public auction where the bidding can reach atmospheric levels as avid collectors try to outbid each other to own this rare violin.

If you enjoy reading about interesting luxury news stories like the recovery of the stolen Stradivarius violin, then come back often to follow our popular luxury blog. We enjoy sharing the best news from the world of luxury.

Picasso Painting Sells for Record $179M at Christie’s Art Auction

A world record was set last week when a Pablo Picasso painting from 1955 sold for a a staggering $179.4M! The previous record was $142.4M for a painting titled “Three Studies of Lucian Freud” by British painter Francis Bacon. That prized painting was sold in a 2013 art auction by Christie’s in New York City.

The final auction bid price for the Picasso painting was $179,365,000. For now, the painting buyer has decided to remain anonymous.

The Picasso painting was titled, “Women of Algiers (Version O).” The painting was part of the 15-piece collection by Pablo Picasso, he created between 1954 and 1955. Each piece was assigned a letter, thus “Version O” for the “Women of Algiers” painting. The art was previously owned Victor and Sally Ganz, who are well known American collectors.

Many art experts feel prices for high art prices like the Picasso painting will continue to rise. It’s a result of the huge investment value, combined with art collectors, both established and new, who desire the best art pieces from the most famous artists.

To back up the spike in fine art art auction prices, in 2014 Christie’s has stated their global sales of impressionist and modern art totaled an eye popping $1.2 billion. That value was 19 percent higher than in 2013.

The Picasso painting wasn’t the only world record broken that night. A prized sculpture from Alberto Giacometti sold for $141.3 million, this becoming the most expensive sculpture ever sold.

Have you desired to own a great piece of art to display in your home or add to your prized art collection?
