Petra Nemcova was the breakout star of the 2002 Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issue, which led to her cover appearance for the 2003 edition.
“I may have curves now, but when I started it was in the middle of the heroin chic phase. The likes of Kate Moss and Jodie Kidd almost forced everyone to be really skinny. I tried many diets, from eating very little or just protein to having only fruit all day. It was terrible for my metabolism and took me years to recover.”

In late 2004, When the tsunami hit the beach of Phuket, Thailand, it swept the 25-year-old Czech supermodel and her boyfriend, British photographer Simon Atlee, out to sea. Nemcova suffered a shattered pelvis and internal injuries. Atlee’s body was found 4 months later, and formally identified.
“There are lots of things which I would love to tell him, but in some way, I also feel that I lost the person closest to me. And I got a second chance to live. So in a way I feel that I live for both of us… and I will do my best.”
