Hulopoe Beach Park

Hulopoe Beach Park

Hulopoe Beach Park on Lanai is a wondrous part of this little island. Hulupoe is located on the south east coast of Lanai and is not that far from the Manele Bay boat landing, which is just below the luxurious Manele Bay Hotel Lanai Hawaii.

The Hulopoe Beach Park has a relatively steep shoreline, making it an ideal swimming spot. This lovely beach is also carpeted in beautiful golden sand.

Body boarding and surfing are several of the popular activities, along with snorkeling. Snorkeling is especially popular, due to the high number and variety of tropical fish that live in the area’s coral filled crystal waters. Of course for those who are a bit more adventurous, off-shore diving excursions are available.

The warm Pacific waters surrounding the park are also home to a thriving marine reserve. Because of this, fishing is restricted to only a simple hook and line from the shore. Due to the presence of this marine safe house.

The Hulopoe waters are also alive with stingrays and jellyfish. Swimmers should always be aware of their surroundings and not panic if they do happen to cross paths with one of these two potentailly dangerous species.

Lanai’s Hulopoe Beach is one of the few places you can legally camp and experience a memorable night under the clear, Pacific night sky. The park itself is equipped with restrooms that have both showers and running water. In addition, there are several picnic tables and barbecue sites distributed around the park’s six camp sites.

Camping permits are issued by the Lanai Company (the owners) and many times not valid for more than seven days.

Visitors to Hulopoe Beach also have access to shaded picnic areas, barbeque sites, and falls directly at the doorstep of the The Manele Bay Hotel and the Lodge at Koele.

Hulupoe Beach is a must for vacationers of Lanie. Who can resist the allure of the soft, white sands, 70 degree waters, and the intricate tide pools that populate this scenic area.

Hulupoe is truly one of Hawaii’s best beaches.

History of Yankee Stadium

Yankee stadium

It is the quintessential baseball stadium. It is “The House that Ruth Built,” and “The Home of Champions.” It is none other than Yankee Stadium. Yankee Stadium is a cultural landmark with a history like no other ballpark.

But this year will be the last one for Yankee Stadium. The stadium will be replaced by a modern, more fan-friendly facility across the street – one that will feature a martini bar.

Yankee Stadium has come to represent an oasis in the midst of one of the worst sections of New York City, the Bronx. Her majestic facade beckons you to enter. Looking out upon the field one can view the clean dirt, impeccably lined along the baselines. The perfectly cut green grass appears to never end, fading out of sight into the vast, cavernous outfield.

The smell of the hot dogs and peanuts, the sound of the bat cracking, the feel of a crisp autumn day brings one’s senses alive. Today, Yankee Stadium draws fans from all over the world to experience the game of baseball. But, back when the stadium was built, the sport was being resurrected by the likes of one man, Babe Ruth.

Only one year after the Yankees purchased Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox,  the Yankees made one more buy that would forever change the way the game was watched.

In 1921, the management team of the New York Yankees announced that it had purchased a 10-acre lot in the west Bronx. The land was purchased for $675,000 from the estate of William Waldorf Astor. The land was positioned across the Harlem River, where the former of the Yankees, the Polo Grounds, sat.

Up until the new stadium was built, the Yankees shared the Polo Grounds with the National League Team the Giants. However, because of the Babe Ruth acquisition, the Yankees were clobbering attendance records, shattering the draw of the Giants, and other major league teams, for that matter.

Historic Yankee Stadium

The fans came to see Babe. He was the drawing power that helped to save baseball and generate ongoing interest in the national past-time. In just one year after acquiring the Babe, the Yankees’ attendance had doubled. The Yankees attendance put the Giants to shame, which prompted the owner of the Giants to promptly evict the popular team from the Polo Grounds. The year was 1921.

Later that year, the Yankees’ owners resolved to build a spectacular stadium of their own. The goal was to create baseball’s first three-tiered structure, with a capacity of 70,000. It would be baseball’s first official stadium.

Originally, the plan was for a triple-decked stadium, with a roof all the way around. Because the stadium seemed too much like a tower and too foreboding, the original plans were scaled back. The triple deck would no longer go all around the stadium, but would end at the foul poles. A 15-foot copper facade was also erected to adorn the stadium’s third deck, which became one of the stadium’s most recognized and grandest feature.

The original Yankee stadium, like today’s, favored left-hand hitters. The original dimensions of the stadium were 295 to dead right, 395 to dead left, and up to 429 feet to center.

Amazingly enough, Yankee Stadium was constructed in only 284 days, and it was ready for its inaugural game against the Red Sox on April 18, 1923. During that game, Babe Ruth officially christened the stadium with a three-run homer. It was easy to see why Yankee Stadium was commonly referred to as “The House that Ruth Built.”

The first game in the stadium yielded a crowd of 74,200, topping what had originally been expected. The stadium also pleased its fans with an unheard of eight bathrooms for men and women.

Yankee Stadium’s five monuments include tributes to Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Miller James Huggins, Mickey Mantle, and Joe DiMaggio.

Many facelifts and modernizations later, Yankee Stadium has withstood the test of time, and is still held by many, as the greatest venue in all of baseball.

Even though the new stadium will welcome the Yankees next season, none of us will ever forget the original – Yankee Stadium.

Ciroc Vodka

Cîroc vodka is a brand of distilled beverage manufactured in France. It is claimed by the drink’s promoters that it is distinguished by the fact that it is derived from grapes, in contrast to corn, sorghum, rye, wheat, or potatoes that are more commonly used. In France it can be legally considered vodka, but the same cannot be said about the drink in the US.

Last year, oc Vodka and Sean “Diddy” Combs created a powerful strategic alliance. The 50-50 joint venture with Diageo, the spirits giant, for Mr. Combs to be the brand manager of the Ciroc vodka line.

Mr. Combs says he made the profit-sharing deal only after refusing to work solely as a pitchman.“My brand is rocket fuel. It would take this brand 10 years to get to where I can take it in one year,” he says. “I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t want to do just endorsements. I want ownership.”

Endorsement deals are an excellent way for celebrities to make extra money. Increasingly they seem to be getting the endorsers in trouble because deals usually come with a certain level of brand loyalty.

The latest in the hot seat is P. Diddy. Several sources have reported that Diddy has been seen drinking the pricey 1800 tequila. News like this typically wouldn’t be a big issue but P. Diddy has received $100 million to be the brand builder for Ciroc.

Eurweb reports that he has issued a press release saying that he’s given up “champagne and tequila” and that his PR folks say that the reports of his tequila swilling are false. The NY Post reported just a couple of weeks ago that he was seen drinking Malibu rum and pineapple cocktails, which he also denied.

Diamond Head State Monument, Oahu

Diamond Head State Monument

Diamond Head is Hawaii’s most famous landmark. Known in Hawaiian as Le’ahi, so named by Hi’laka, the sister of the fire god Pele, because the summit supposedly resembles the forehead (lae) of the yellowfin tuna fish (‘ahi). It wasn’t until the late 1700′s, when western traders thought they had found diamonds on the slope of the crater, that they began to call it Diamond Head.

But before you head to the Diamond Head State Monument to dig for diamonds, you should know that (to the disappointment of the western explorers and traders) the so-called diamonds were merely calcite crystals, worthless to mine.

The must-do at the Diamond Head State Monument is the short hike through old military bunkers. (Bring water and a flashlight.) The historical trail to the summit is an easy 1.4 mile hike that climbs an elevation of 560 feet and ends with sweeping views of the Honolulu area.

There are handrails, plenty of places to rest, and places of interest, so allow 1.5 to 2 hours for a leisurely round-trip hike. Also, bring a flashlight because portions of this trail go through long, dark tunnels. Amazingly, some locals and visitors jog up and down Diamond Head for exercise.

To get to the access road to the trail, follow Kalakaua Avenue to Kapiolani Park. Go north on Diamond Head Avenue to 18th Avenue.

Ex-Googlers Say Cuil is Cool

Cuil Search Engine

Anna Patterson used to work for Google, after quiting in 2006. But her efforts earlier in her career led to Google buying her Internet search engine technology in 2004, to upgrade it’s own system.

Now Patterson thinks she may have struck gold again, but this time she’s not selling the search engine technology. Her goal was to develop a more comprehensive and efficient way to scour the Internet.

The new search engine is called “Cuil”, pronounced like “cool” and was funded by $33 million in venture capital. Working with her husband Tom Costello and two former Google engineers, Russell Power and Louis Monier, they set out to develop better ways to search.

It’s been reported that Cuil’s search engine index covers 120 billion Web pages, and Patterson believes that’s three times what Google indexes.

Instead of trying to mimic Google’s methods of ranking the quantity and quality of links to Web sites, Patterson says that with Cuil, the technology will drill down into actual page content.  In addition, Cuil’s search results will be displayed in a more magazine like format versus the vertical stack of Web links like Google offers.

The other big difference between Cuil and Google, is that Cuil promises not to retain information about uses’ search histories or surfing patterns.  This has been a sore soft in the industry, especially with privacy watchdogs.

Only time will tell if Cuil can really challenge Google for the crown of top search engine. Even heavyweights like Yahoo and Microsoft have been losing ground to the Internet giant.

Auberge Du Soleil – Napa Valley

Auberge du Soleil NapaValley

What began as a fine California-french restaurant created by Claude Rouas, a leading San Francisco restaurateur has evolved into one of Americas most sought-after small luxury hotels and a perennial recipient of the hospitality industry’s highest honors.

Auberge Du Soleil opened in 1982 as Napa Valley’s first fine-dining restaurant and the vision of French – born Rouas who sought to recreate the sun-drenched ambiance of province in the California Wine Country.

Perched on the slope of Rutherford Hill overlooking Napa Valley, the Auberge quickly gained recognition as one of the leading restaurants in Northern California.  Not only for its superb cuisine, but also its spectacular views of the Napa Valley below.

In 1985, responding to guest demand, Rouas and partner Robert Harmon opened The Inn. A collection of sun and earth toned cottages housing 50 room and suites each with french doors opening out to a terrace and sweeping views of olive grooves and the vine- studded Valley.

The Auberges French-accented California style and soft-spoken Luxury Echo the character of Napa Valley – a place to savor the bounty of fine rood and wine and immerse oneself in an exquisite natural setting.

Since the inns opening, guests have been drawn to the Auberge for its privacy, tranquility and unmistakable romance.

With a sophisticated new design and acclaimed new chef, the restaurant continues to win international recognition. The Inn also recently introduced Spa Du Soleil, a retreat modeled after a centuries-old monastery.

Romance and all that it entails–escape, total privacy and the intimacy of having a beautiful spot to share–is an important part of the allure of Auberge Du Soleil.
