Good Times at the Jump Up Celebration on St. Croix
In the Caribbean, the term “Jump Up” typically refers to dancing. Last Friday was the Jump Up celebration on St. Croix. This popular event is held four times each year. At sundown, all the streets of Christiansted are shutdown from local traffic.
Throughout the year, the many islands of the Caribbean offer all kinds of celebrations. From carnivals to festivals to holiday celebrations. The local residents that live on the island of St. Croix are called Crucians. They are joined by visitors from around the Caribbean and the world to celebrate Jump Up.
Jump Up celebrates the unique Caribbean lifestyle and island culture. There’s dancing in the street, arts and crafts to purchase and fabulous local cuisine to try. Feel the island vibe through the sounds of steel drums. The Calypso music puts everyone in a great mood.
Of course alcoholic drinks are a standard for any social event. Rum cocktails are very popular on St. Croix. In honor of Jump Up, Cruzan Rum has announced a delicious tasting cocktail – Christiansted Swizzle. Named after the city’s famous downtown harbor where the majority of festivals take place.
Cruzan Rum has been actually distilled on St. Croix, so it’s the perfect spirit to celebrate life. Below is the recipe to make your own Christiansted Swizzle cocktail with Cruzan Rum.
Cruzan® Christiansted Swizzle
Ingredients:
1 1/2 parts Cruzan® 151 Proof Rum
1 part Cruzan® Aged Dark Rum
3/4 parts fresh lime juice
1 part pineapple juice
Cruzan® Black Strap float
Mint sprigs
Method:
Combine 151, Dark Rum, lime and pineapple juice in a tall glass over crushed ice. Swizzle until a nice ice sheen develops on your glass. Top with crushed ice, add a float of Black Strap to the top and garnish with a spanked mint sprig.
